February 2019 Meeting

Jo from Puddleducks came to our February meeting with her mobile shop of beautiful fabrics and we were able to add to our collections.  Jo also hosted a mini workshop for us and we had a good hand-sewing session making "mug rugs" !  Thank you Jo for a lovely evening.

We also had a large stash of quilting books for sale, each at a bargain price.

March 2019 Meeting

At the March meeting we had a visit from Janet Bevan who came to talk us through her life in Journal Quilts.  This inspiring presentation took us from her early days of making these small quilts, through to the exquisit examples of her needlecraft skills of today.  Each design was also exhibited for us to see Janet's fine free motion quilting artistry, cleverly showcasing her use of detail, textures, colour and skills working within a small area.

April 2019 Meeting

We held our Annual General Meeting at which the Chairman and Secretary stood down after ten years of inspiring work for Orpington Quilters.  Thank you Mags and Carol for all those years dedicated to making the group lively and interesting.

They have shared their knowledge and skills so generously.   We have benefitted from their activities both at Guild and regional level.

We welcome our new Chairman and Secretary, Polly Sonmez and Yvonne Stafford.

June 2019 Meeting

Our new Chairman Polly gave us an insight into how she makes her colourful fabric collages based on views of towns and villages.

Based on the book by Karen Eckmeier called Happy Villages, Polly showed us how she gathers together the fabrics, cuts the shapes from a template, and assembles them to create striking pictures of villages and towns on the Mediterranean coastline or wherever her imagination takes her.

We were all fascinated at this variation of patchwork and quilting and the creativity in the room was buzzing!    See below some of Polly's creations.

Polly started another village to demonstrate to us how to randomly put together the fabric pieces.  There are no rules about how this is done.  Rooftops, doors and windows are cut from scraps and added to bring the village to life. When the scene is set a piece of netting is placed over the whole picture and simply quilted to anchore down the shapes.  Finally, add a the binding and the masterpiece is finished!

July 2019 Meeting

Norma held a mini workshop this evening with instructions to make a tissue holder.  This nice little project could be machine or hand sewn and embellished as we wish.

September 2019

We invited Pascale Michalski to speak to us about her fabulous art quilts.

Click here to read more about her talk.

October 2019

Mags gave a wonderful demonstration of "Quilt As You Go", a method of completing each block in its entirety by quilting the front, batting and backing in one go. Each block is then machine bound with a contrasting strip and then the finished blocks are joined to complete the quilt. Many of our members were keen to see this in action so Mags had to deliver the demonstration twice!

November 2019

Diane delivered an excellent demonstration of a curved log cabin made in materials of the red, white and green of Christmas. By building each log cabin square with differing widths of material, the circular effect resulted in a beautiful Christmas wreath. Everyone was very impressed as this was Diane's own design, which she kindly shared to the group after the meeting.

January 2020

Very exciting start to a New Year -  the group was offered a block of the month project to start this month.  Three main colours and background required or the project can be made with scrappy fabrics.

February 2020

At this meeting we were treated to another episode in Jennifer's series of "My Life in Stitches" It was the turn of Yvonne Seymour and Diane Brown to be interviewed and they both brought in a fabulous selection of their work for us to see.  Click here to read more about this.

We also had a visit from Jo at Puddleducks with her Pop-up Shop, a wonderful selection of gorgeous fabrics for sale.

We also saw a terrific selection of Tree Blocks made for the Australian bush fires victims.  Read more on the Show'n Tell Gallery page.

March 2020

Also, many members presented their 'show and tells' including several incubator quilts. Click here to see their amazing quilts on the Show'n Tell Gallery page.

After the March meeting it has been necessary for us to cancel our meetings at Crofton Halls due to the Corona Pandemic.  We wish everyone well and hope to be able to start our meetings when it is safe for us to do so..

See our new Block of the Month page.  Please send in photos of your blocks so far for us all to see.

Stay well everyone.
